The Top 3 Questions (& Answers) for Working with a Wedding Planner

As a bride (or groom) searching for + hiring wedding vendors, you have a TON of questions swirling around in your head (Seriously, it can feel like a tornado up in there.). When I talk to engaged couples that are thinking about hiring a wedding planner (or already have hired me), here are some of the biggies that pop up:


1. My venue has a coordinator, why do I need to hire another coordinator?


A venue coordinator is just that – a coordinator that works for the venue, not for you. Don’t be fooled by their title. Some of the “venue coordinators” that sell you on the venue or the package you buy are not even working on the day or at the time of your wedding. Verify that the person assigned as your coordinator is in fact working on that date and time.

Also, ask specific questions about what their duties are as a coordinator. (While this doesn’t include all the questions you should ask, it can give you an idea.)

  • Do you verify everything with all of my vendors?

  • What do you do if one of my vendors doesn’t show up on the day of my wedding?

  • Do you create a timeline/agenda and share it with all of my vendors to make sure everyone is on the same page?

(BTW: These are but a few of the things that I take care of as a wedding planner + day of coordinator.)


2. What makes you different from other wedding planners?

I can go on and on about how many years of experience I have, how many weddings I have done and how my creative juices are always flowing, but that’s not what it’s all about. When it comes right down to it, it is the connection that the two of us – you and me – have and the trust that you have in me that I too can see the vision you have in your head and that I have the ability to turn that vision into a reality that you walk into on the day of your wedding.

That’s what makes me different. I understand you and I can channel your vision and turn it into a reality for your wedding.


3. Why is your pricing so high?

There is a famous quote, “If you think it’s expensive hiring a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.”

This speaks volumes, but I can also add that years of hands-on experience, creativity, and relationships with the top vendors in the area all matter. Those just starting out or planners without as much as experience as I have can (and do) undercharge. That’s OK for them because we all have to start somewhere, but do you really want to leave the fate of your wedding in a planner’s hands based on price alone?
