What to do to Avoid Wedding Catastrophes

As a wedding planner, I watch bride after bride (and groom after groom) fret about all of the things that can possibly go wrong on their wedding day. I always give my couples the same piece of advice and now I’m going to give it to you.
“No matter how much you plan, something is likely to go wrong. The only thing that really matters in the end is that you, your groom, and your officiant show up. The rest is icing on the cake.”
Always Have a Backup Plan (aka a Plan B)
I once watched as a photographer backed up to take a shot at the wedding reception and fell onto the cake table. It all happened so fast that there wasn’t anything I or anyone else could do about it.
That’s right, the cake was destroyed. The bride and groom didn’t have a cake for the cake cutting ceremony and the guests didn’t have dessert.
Of course, I sprang into action. Along with the venue caterer, we were able to come up with a small cake the bride and groom could cut and the caterer put together a fruity dessert for the guests to enjoy on a hot afternoon.
The moral of the story is that you always have to have a backup plan for every piece of your wedding.
Some examples:
If your wedding is outside, arrange for an inside or covered backup location, or plan to rent a tent, in case of inclement weather. A few days before the wedding, you can decide, based on the weather forecast, if you can continue with the outside venue or need to switch to the backup location.
Pack an emergency kit. Similar to a first-aid kit, pack medicines, over-the-counter drugs and smelling salts for illness and fainting on the wedding day. You can also include a sewing kit for dress and clothing emergencies and extra makeup and hair accessories for hair and makeup malfunctions. (If you are working with a wedding planner/coordinator, he or she should have an emergency kit that contains all of these items – and more!)
Missing DJ or band — no problem. Hook up an iPod to the venue’s sound system. Pipe background music into the reception room during the meal. Turn up the volume and change the iPod selection to dance music when it is time to get the party started.
Roll with the Punches
Weddings are not perfect. No matter how much you plan, something, typically out of your control, can go off the beaten path. When it happens, laugh it off and roll with the punches.
Think of a way to correct it or turn to your wedding professionals for alternatives, but don’t freak out or let it ruin your special day.
In the end, the only thing that really matters is that you say your vows and you marry the person you plan to spend the rest of your life with.
